How perfectly plotted out does an idea have to be before you can patent it?
If I want to go open source with it, is it still possible to make money with the idea?

Even if you go open source, you should patent it. Otherwise someone else will take your "open source" idea and patent it under their name.
See: Google. They've done this a billion times and keep getting away with it even after multiple lawsuits.
Seeing as patent law has many complexities, where can I get some information on how the system works before I decide to toss 10k into a patent? Any one stop books? blogs?
