Opening up a payment channel on the LN first requires on chain transaction. What will be the course of action when the mempool is inevitably clogged again when the Segwit capacity upgrade is no longer enough? Segwit will allow for 2-4mb blocks, which in the short term will mean a clearer mempool and cheap LN payment channel fees. But what happens when the network gets conjested again with the large influx of people flocking to Bitcoin, what will be the plan then? Both LN payment channels and on chain transactions will be through the roof.
