I have some historical figurines (huge history buff). A good paint job would finish their appearance.

I guess that would be my first bit of advice (from a customer perspective): Be willing to paint more than just D&D figurines, be willing to pivot into general figurine, or mask, or intricate object painting.

That shouldn't be so bad, because if I ask you to say "Please paint my Assyrian armour recreation", it should be a touch easier than painting realistic flesh-tones for figurines with faces.

Be willing to branch out your services, in order to grab more customers.

Here's another quick business tip: create tiers of services.

Say some dude just wants his mask painted for a halloween party. The longevity, waterproofing, etc of your paint job matters less then.

But say I have a collection of Roman and Assyrian armour that I want you to paint. Say I'm an enthusiastic historical actor, or a HEMA fighter.... I want that paint job to last. So I will be willing to pay extra to get better quality paint, to get a coat of protective varnish, to have you specifically choose the most appropriate paint for the type of material, etc...

This will allow you to take advantage of the pareto principle, whereby a small 20% of your customers are responsible for 80% of your income, through high-quality requests, and thus high pay.

One final tip: taxes.

Since this is a business, you're going to be listed as an independent contractor.

That means you'll be needing a W2 tax form. If you work from your apartment or home, and the room which you devote to painting is at least 10% of the floor-space, you get to write off 10% of your rent, electricity, heating, cleaning supplies, maybe even internet (if you filter your requests via the web).

Now, I can't """"legally"""" recommend what I'm about to say next.... but if you're doing a job for a family member or friend, or someone you know.... try to keep that profit off the books for a bit (AND NOT GET CAUGHT). It'll save your new business a bit, be willing to bend the rules.

If you do get caught, just stick with the line "Oh, I didn't know" and just pay the amount. They won't realistically care to charge you a fee if your business isn't bringing in six figures.

I've been there, I've been audited. My small business owed 500$ that I """"didn't know about"""""... they just asked me for the 500$, and didn't tack on a single penny in fees, let alone the thousands that people are scared they'll be punished with.
