What is the reasoning in doing this? Is it datamining, and if so, how harmful is it realistically? Is there a more innocent reason?

I am thinking of participating in the ByteBall airdrop tomorrow, but I am skeptical obviously.

While I am sure they'd like to, I am not sure how they could based on the information you give and the security I have. Also, their code is open source and the past airdrops seemed to go fine.
