Watch this video to see rational behind trading. Essentially, you can trade in a fashion that minimizes downside, but maximizes (or unlimits) upside. You see this rational behind many different derivative strategies, options come to mind.
Trading trend, or buying the dip and selling the peak does work (vice versa for shorting). All the time? Of course not. But if max your upside, limit downside, while taking sensibly sized trades, you're gonna keep yourself in the game long enough to eventually make significant amounts of money.
Hedge funds will often use this rational too.
