My brother made this bogus argument with me over the Health Care issue here in America.
He said that Monopolies were Illegal.
I understand that there is illegal ways in which a monopoly is established but the position of a Monopoly is inherently illegal? That was hog-wash.
Anyone have any references to this accusation?

Google: anti-trust laws
Read the wikipedia pages that come up.

Yes they are illegal but what does it matter when you have enough money to play off the corrupt government so they look the other way?

Here's a list of some legal ones that see even supported by the US government:
Public utilities (Electricity, ISP, TV, Phone, etc.)
ExxonMobil
Publix
Walmart/Sam'sClub
BestBuy

> Walmart
25% market share
> Best Buy
25% market share
> Exxon
16%
I don't think you know what a monopoly is.

From what I'm reading from the Anti-Trust Laws...when a Monopoly is formed they dissect how it was formed. If there was coercive methods on how it was created then it's illegal.
Corporate Espionage
Stock Manipulation
Mafia Style Intimidation
Fraud
Etc.
But if the Monopoly was formed through sheer luck than the Government will begin to implement ways to challenge the monopoly; i,e; Encouraging off shore companies to compete
Enforce Regulation
Set Tarrifs and Prices Minimums
Etc.

And you're right. I looked into those and THEY are Monopolies, but none are taken to task through a lawsuit.

the evil capitalists are oppressing me that's what i heard at the bernie rally

The only evil in Capitalism, is the self-destructive economics of Industrialism. Capitalism is the most honest way to get what you want;
"Want something? Work for it." - Capitalism
"Want something? Everyone Pitch In!" - Socialism
"Want something? Feel free to take it off the dead dissidents we've slaughtered." - Communist

you're correct, monopolies are not illegal in the US, same in UK.
However their creation can be prevented by the regulator by blocking proposed mergers that would create a monopoly.
Existing monopolies, for simplicity that have arisen organically over time, are subject to regulatation so that they are not able to /abuse/ their monopolistic position.
tldr; monopolies are not de-jure illegal. any form of cartel on the other hand will be in the US and UK.
