I've been receiving a ton of telemarketing scam calls. I've been waiting on several important calls from businesses around the U.S. and so I typically answer whether or not I know the number.
Often the calls contain some automated message that is clearly irrelevant to me:
>we contacted you four times about extending your auto warranty, and are now giving you a curtsy call"
meanwhile I drive a 15 year old car with 150k miles on it. Sometimes I will wait to speak to a person (with the intent of yelling at them), and the phone will just automatically hang up.
However, the more bizarre calls are those where I answer and no one responds. The call then hangs up after roughly 15 seconds. I'm primarily curious what the strategy/purpose of such calls is.
My theories:
1. I am repeatedly being put on a list for scammers.
2. There is some data collection agency determining if a real person is behind certain phones.
3. someone is trying to target me personally (least likely?)
Thanks for any responses.
Whenever any kind of telemarketing company calls me I just add them to my list of rejected numbers. One company has been calling me every day for 5 years. I can see their number in my call log as rejected every day
