The blockchain Golem uses is just ETH. ETH was created to fund projects like Golem, and their tokens are just to be able to pay for their services. However, there is useful resources that come from the blockchain in Golem. I haven't read the code in detail, but my guess is (and hopefully) they use the blockchain to decentralize the rendering servers. This allows data to be decentralized and secure.
