did you download the standalone version?
it should find peers through irc but if it doesn't add:
addnode=coinminers.net
addnode=cacaperro.chickenkiller.com
to the cacaperro.conf file folder in appdata/roaming
if the file doesn't exist create it with notepad
the network is still tiny so it's normal
