Tips are great because it incentivizes people to work hard or else they lose part of their paycheck. Many euro restaurants I've been too had absolutely shit service because no one had to put in any extra effort.

In Australia there's not really a 'tipping' system (at restaurants you can still 'tip' if you want to but it's not expected and most people don't). However, people actually get paid decent wages (I believe min wage for an adult working at even a place like McDonalds is like $20 per hour or more). Cost of living is generally higher too though.
