What If I buy a few tons of physical gold, situate them in a tax free country and then release a crypto currency and call it "DigiGold" or some shit. Every coin will correspond to a gram of real physical gold but will be a crypto so it will be easy to exchange anonymously on the interwebz. Charge a small fee for transactions and make it possible and not complicated to cash it in for either gold or market value of gold. Why is it a horrible idea?

It is possible to ship gold internationally but not always the best idea in terms of taxes. It is in fact much more important that it will be backed by the gold and will represent it but an option to cash in is definitely a must. As for profit: like all financial institutions through integrated transaction fees.
