Sup /biz/, career-wise I'm a cross roads. I've been at my company for about 2 years and it's mostly great, good pay, benefits, live at home, one really good raise and bonuses.... but besides pay there is really no room for growth which is making me antsy. I'm afraid of getting complacent and stagnant and then not being able to do anything else. I also don't really want to be a solely a code monkey my whole life, right now I do coding but would not consider myself a software engineer.
The thing is most tech job openings, especially those I'm somewhat qualified for are software developers. Ok that's not so bad right now, but I don't want to get stuck. Should I apply for developer jobs or the other stuff? How do I make more money than I would as a developer, do these positions exist without nepotism? What type of job titles should I look for? PM obviously, but these are never advertised so must be internal only.
And finally when would one be ready to make the jump to self employed or running a business? Albeit I consider myself an expert in my particular area, it's a small piece of the whole pie. If I went out on my own right now I would either do some speciality consulting like sys admin stuff or web dev just because of the low barrier, but neither is really scalable or super lucrative.
What do? I need a mentor, but don't even have friends.

Unless you want to make meme apps you really have to establish yourself first somehow. And a job is a great way to learn skills. For now it's like school but they pay me.

Yeah I suppose I should at least talk about it, it's a big company and there are other teams. My sentiment is that the place just doesn't feel ambitious and that I'm missing out not capitalizing on opportunities. That's both personal growth and technical growth. I'll trawl linked in and see people I know working at cool places and that have openings. Everyone puts up a facade though so it's hard to say what's actually a nice place to work or not.
