if i am just going to trade the alts for btc anyway, wouldn't i just buy btc and trade that? i've heard alternative strategies, like using ltc for instance. But won't i rack up fees as i transfer many times?

BTC has 3$ fees atm and 1day+ confirmation times, good luck with that. Easier to send ETH/LTC for 10ct fees and then exchange at an exchange for BTC and then trade.

exchange fees are insignificant, just ignore them

the btc transfer fee, however, is substantial and VERY slow

use LTC to transfer from exchange to exchange, fast as fuck
