What I don't understand about cloud mining contracts is

What I don't understand about cloud mining contracts is that they says it's 1-year but are do they calculate is Per month? Per day? Per year? I want to buy some ETH mining power and get some more coins with out wasting power on my end but I don't want to lock myself into a some crazy contract. I feel like I'm over looking something but can I get a second opinion on cloud mining?
