Why is the 1060 and 1070 being shilled for mining

i bought a 8gb one like 4 months ago for $240

I'm getting about 30-31mh/s with overclocked 1070's on ethminer. They consume the same power as RX 480's as far as I'm aware. Plus they are actually good at mining other things.

nvidia cards aren't all that bad at mining altcoins

Is there any point in mining with a single 1070?

If so, what is best to mind and how ?

nicehash is the way to go, 1070 is worth. Almost $4 a day with the 1060 you'll get better results with a 1070

If you leave your computer on anyway you might as well just run nicehash (or run Eth miner in a pool if you wanna put more effort in but not really worth for a single 1070). You'll make about 0.002 BTC per day with nicehash with a single 1070.

I can get my hands on the 1080's for $450...is it worth it?

Anybody know how U.S. taxes work on mined coins?

1080's aren't really much better than 1070's for mining. They're slightly better but also consume more power and cost more. The 1080Ti seems to be the most efficient card (in terms of hashing power per watt), but when you consider initial capital limitations the 1070 comes out on top (only being slightly less efficient than the 1080Ti but you can buy a shit ton more of them for the same $$$).
