And I should add, what is a reasonable fee to pay for transaction fees?

I was looking at the cost of depositing money on my local canadian exchange, buying bitcoin, transfering that BTC to bittrex, and buying my preferred altcoin

It came to about 5% of the cost of my initial deposit to do all this. Is this a standard amount to pay? It seems high
