You will have to download the wallet from the coins website/ github etc.
So you probably only do that if you are going to actually hold long term, unless you actually want to manage a bunch of wallets and transfer coins back and forth to exchanges.

Ah I see, thank you. I was thinking I could just generate another public/private key and use it in the block chain; this makes much more sense.

Fuck that then, I'll just wait for BTC to correct and buy in through an exchange and send to cold storage for a year.
