Depends on your location. Different places have diff options. If you wanna trade alt coins usually you buy btc, transfer to an exchange, then trade.

If you want to hold something longer term, the different coins make wallets.

When you want to cash to paper money, then yes you transfer it back to btc, then into a service that can give you "fiat" (paper money), either localbitcoins, or one of the bigger exchanges.

Take care though depending on your location some banks/exchanges are dicey when cashing out so research in advance.

If you simply want to guard gains in fiat you can trade to the USD tether on Bittrex, which is valued like USD but doesn't cash you out.

Bigger coins have a bunch of guides or instructions for it, these shitty smaller coins never do. Where do I get a wallet for it, what mining software supports it?
