Yet the client shows 0.00 XVG and says it's fully synced.

I had the same trouble, £13k and no way to get it in.

Managed to buy lots of BTC when it went low on Coinfloor. (Seems to be a good place for GBP, not much USD or EUR trade there), then moved my funds to Bittrex and Kraken, tracking them through Coinigy.
