Their github is very active and product is avail for download. I don't have a slack account, but it sounds like that where all the mining related discussion is.
Just the minimal amount of research, it seems like they are legit. I have no idea if they can really offer a cost savings 10x less than S3 storage, but who knows.

There's someone about to put ~1 Petabyte into the system, and Minecoin is about to ship within the next month. The sia devs aren't the ones putting storage into the network.

a petabyte is still pretty smalltime when talking about a global cloud storage network that's supposed to compete with Amazon. There's still the speed and overhead issues, and they'll need top rated reliability if they want people to store anything important on Sia. I'm holding 100k so of course I'm hoping for good things to come, but in all honesty Sia seems unlikely to succeed.
