Anyone know how I could get into a good finance career? I'm studying Accounting at a no name college. I can probably get a job as an account or financial adviser easily, but I'm hoping to work at a good finance firm for a few years, and then leave to start my own company. Private Equity seems the most appealing, but it's also extremely hard to get into. Does anyone have advice for a lowly accounting major who wants to be extremely wealthy?

You can make a load of easy money every year during tax season, just do peoples income taxes and charge about $100 - $300

Being able to sustain yourself is fantastic, so thank you for your suggestion. But I'm looking towards being extremely successful. And I don't really see that kind of a future in accounting, even as a partner at one of the Big 4, you don't make as much as some other finance fields.

this is true. i know a lady that only works during the tax season months and makes arond 100k then just fucks around for the rest of the year traveling and shit. she has been doing it for years and has a strong client base though but still you can start young and work your way up.

It helps to get an internship, or to transfer to a school with a big network.

Here's my advice. "Good" firms are extremely competitive to get into. You essentially need to have gone to a top 25 school and/or be "diverse." If you're a white guy, sorry m8. I got a job offer out of college (economics degree) with a bank headquarters but turned it down because of low salary offer at $35k.

In terms of accounting though, I would apply for master's degree programs and see if you can get a full ride. That's what I did with my econ degree. One additional year and now I work for a defense contractor with clearance as a financial analyst a 60k starting out. While education is a meme, master's degrees are valued as less than 10% of the US population has one (and the bulk of them are women with gender studies, psychology, education, etc. degrees). A master's in accounting with (and this is very important) a CPA, I PROMISE you would get $60+ starting out where I work.

That starting out is pretty good. At 25 years old I own my own house (almost fully paid off), have a relatively large crypto and stock portfolio, and amazing benefits with my job. Don't just limit yourself to finance firms. Look into private contractors with the government. Part of the reason I got this job is because Lord Trump has bestowed billions of dollars in defense spending to the military who, by extension, contacts with my company.

In short:
>get masters in accounting (full ride if possible) and a CPA
>don't limit yourself to just finance firms. Look into defense contracting companies. HUGE demand for CPA's, especially where I work.
>obviously, start investing now if you haven't already
>accumulate general skills but be sure to SPECIALIZE in something. I specialize in econometrics/forecasting. Be able to do a bit of everything but really excel at one thing.

Any other questions, I'm open. I will be working late.

Awesome advice, thanks. I have a few questions though.
Is a master's in accounting better than an MBA, or maybe switch to a masters in finance or economics?
How would I go about switching to starting my own practice if I worked with a private contractor? It's not as clear cut as something like, say, financial planning.
Do you have any networking tips?
Are there any jobs overseas that I could do for awhile? Hopefully something interesting, like in an interesting country, or a dangerous one.
Should I give up on my autistic desire to go to law school? It's just a hold over from the fact I used to be a political science major, but switched to accounting because I'd actually like to get a job.

Thanks again for the quality post.

>Is a master's in accounting better than an MBA, or maybe switch to a masters in finance or economics?
An MBA from a top 25 school will probably set you up. You don't see people but M.Sc. after their name, but you see them put MBA. While MBAs are a meme in my opinion, normies and HR departments are amazed by them. An MBA with a focus in accounting might be good.

Masters in finance I would definitely recommend, but then you might miss out of the CPA opportunity. I don't know how much you do or don't want a CPA. Your call. Avoid masters in economics at all costs. Not worth it. I got a full ride for it luckily and my school also pushed data analytics, forecasting, etc. hard so I got lucky I feel. No one in the private market cares about macroeconomics, political economy, Adam Smith, or monetary policy. All interesting stuff, but entirely worthless in terms of skills. I wish I would have done a master's in finance but I'm happy where I'm at now I guess.

>How would I go about switching to starting my own practice if I worked with a private contractor? It's not as clear cut as something like, say, financial planning.
Not sure you if could start your own practice. I'm just saying we need CPAs and accounting guys in house. I've done minor accounting reports and want to kill myself when I do it. You could strart your own tax practice like other anons said, but I think working for private defense contractors would really set you up for success if you needed to save some capital before opening your own business, especially while Trump is in office.

>Do you have any networking tips?
Don't be autistic. Always shake hands with everyone. Make a LinkedIn and get a Twitter. I deleted my FB, Snapchat, all that shit my freshman year in college. I don't regret those, but definitely make a LinkedIn and go through your classlists and add everyone, even the professors. Just don't be an autist, make friends with professors because they have contacts.

I was actually unemployed for two months after graduating with a masters and a 4.0. The old adage is true. It's not what you know, it's who you know. I would get involved in a finance club and go to guest speakers conferences. Introduce yourself at the end and ALWAYS add them on LinkedIn. I'm telling you. Normie business people eat that shit up. They don't post on 4chan like me and you. We have to live in their world.

>Are there any jobs overseas that I could do for awhile?
Never been out of the country. Can't say. Don't even have a passport. Though, I know where I work, they have plenty of traveling opportunities in the US for me. I doubt with an accounting background that you'd be moving a lot. But, then again, I'm not sure. I had an interview to be a contract specialist for the Dept. of Defense which I didn't get (also another GREAT job to look into) but I fucked up the interview. $70k+ as a GS-11 or GS-12 can't remember which one it was. There they said you'd travel a lot to Saudi Arabia. Look into that if you're interested. I luckily live next to a huge military base. Lots of opportunity here.

>Should I give up on my autistic desire to go to law school?
If you go to law school, learn tax law and crypto tax law. Probably be very lucrative to go into, but that's your call. Deloitte just got in the EEA... so, who knows, they might want crypto tax lawyer types. I wouldn't mark it off completely.

Good job switching from political science. But a lot of guys who I did my masters in econ with had communications, psychology, meme undergrads and now they are economic developers for cities, work for banks, etc. Just goes to show you that "diversity" pays off. I scoff at that shit, but, like I said, normies and HR people (mostly made of women btw) eat that up.

You're on the right track, m8. GL.

I don't really care about the CPA. I'm only majoring in accounting because it's the poor-man's finance, and my college doesn't offer a finance degree. It offers Business Administration too, but that seems like an over saturated meme degree. Considering I'm looking more towards finance oriented jobs, the finance masters is certainly tempting. But at that level it might be worth it to have the "all around" MBA.

Good advice on starting my own firm. I'm a bit concerned about the logistics of raising capital, finding investors, and getting experience in the field. Something like contracting sounds like it would be a good start for a consulting firm, and then from there I could have a very solid foundation for my delusions of grandeur.

Good networking advice. I have absolutely no idea what people talk about on social media, so I'd just have to worry about not accidentally saying something 'deplorable.' I could never stand social-media, but I guess it's important for networking.

>>2165407
I don't need to leave the country, it was just a question. If I want to leave the country, I'll take a vacation. If I want to get paid doing it, I'll become a mercenary.

I'm not really sure "crypto tax law" is going to be a thing. It might just be a specialty under capital-gains tax. Although if Crypto ever becomes mainstream, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll become the first self-proclaimed expert on Crypto law and markets.

Solid posts man. Any other advice you might have for me? It's so rare to see good posts on /biz/.

No finance degree? That's rough. Accounting is definitely preferable to business admin though. My buddy got a degree in BA and only makes $34,000 a year. BA is what morons do. Definitely look into finance masters and/or MBA. Examine the earnings of masters vs. undergrad degrees. Definitely worth. I luckily got a full-ride for mine and completed it in less than a year. One more year for a considerable amount of earnings and prestige is worth it to me.

Sounds like you'd really like contracting. I really wanted the job but like I said I'm autistic and flubbed the interview. Negotiating contracts, examining legal print, talking prices is what that's all about. Could be really good skills to pick up for consulting.

Networking is what it is, anon. Sucks, but necessary. Ignore retarded social media. I have my LinkedIn for work and a Twitter for following markets and crypto, as well as certain businesses.

Final piece of advice? Get some modafinil because sleeping is a waste of time kek. If I could tell myself something in the past, it would definitely be to be more extroverted and network more. Join those clubs, make a LinkedIn early. Other than that, just don't fuck up and don't waste your time chasing women. Success attracts them naturally and from there you can pick from the lot.

Lots of shitposts on /biz/. Guilty of it myself. But, that's life. Huehue.

I'm not into drugs, but would love to sleep less, and have more energy. How do you get this? Or were you joking?

I thought I made it clear that I'm looking to become the rich-powerful Jew, rather than a cog in the zog.

PS: Hey, I know who you are. Hail Hitler.
