ethereum is mineable by anyone just like any geek off street can go pan for gold in a streambed or find a mineable vein of gold in the earth.

bitcoin is top dog and both of these alt-coins want to displace bitcoin's market cap, thus making them the new default coin that everyone will trade in.
if either of them succeed then that coin will also gain tremendously in demand because it'll be the new coin that everyone exchanges for other alt-coins.
