How are you supposed to long-term invest in government bonds with interest rates like this?
Buy US treasury bonds instead, federal reserve rate hikes are coming up

Why would you want to do that?
What is the benefit? Do you make enough money that the tax free aspect is appealing? Is it the implied stability because a big blue chip stock has very similar stability and a REIT has to pay out a dividend if you are worried about suspension of a dividend.

I want to invest in bonds (corp or gov) to counter-balance the stock ETF portfolio that I'm building and to basically have a less risky way to invest my money, should I be in need of cash and have to sell some holdings.
>>2070795 might I suggest lokking into splitting between
PowerShares S&P 500 Hi Div Low Volity etf (US Corp based)
And Oppenheimer International Bond Fund? (INT Gov based)

If you are looking for yield/ cashflow I would suggest REITs or REIT ETF, I'm assuming that you are European so I'm not sure exactly how comfortable you are with buying a bunch of US-based stuff but I'm in the US and that is where I go first, with an ETF you don't even have to worry about any one company dying.
