This is nothing new besides it being a large scale "attack". Spread of malware is mostly up to luck, bad luck today.

>Microsoft patches 0day last March
>exploit is released to the public
>someone integrates the 0day into their ransomware
>ransomware is now able to pwn whole networks once it gets inside
