Currently looking for a new job and I think my past employer is badmouthing me. I asked them for a reference and they said they would give me a good one, but I'm getting rejections following interviews at companies that contact them, therefore I'm 90% sure they're lying to me and saying bad shit about me.
Question is, if I get a friend to call them and pretend to be an interviewer and confirms that they badmouth me, can I sue this former employer? Will this hold up in court?
well were you a bad employee when you worked with them? that would explain a lot

can't sue somebody for telling the truth
or mentioning a rumor, bathroom masturbator
I've been in this position before, it's better to use a coworker or a manager from a different department who you might know. Out of college when I had no real references I used my manager from my part time retail job and he fucked me over on two jobs before I got the hint.

If they are lying, then yes.
I've always heard companies won't give referrals because of fear of defamation lawsuits they will just confirm your employment.
Ask a person for a referral

Some larger corporations have policies like this but its not something that all companies do.

>liable
It's libel.
Call the companies you interviewed with and ask for reasons OP. They can't unjustifiably cockblock you.
