How hard is it to obtain a patent? What did it cost?

getting a patent isn't necessarily hard. You could even do it yourself. The problem is it won't be strong enough to defend if someone ever knocks off your design. This is the part noobs fail to think about.
Patenting something isn't just about having a novel and profitable idea. It has to be novel AND be novel in a way that you can argue in court, AND it has to be profitable enough that not only does it pay your bills, it has to be valuable enough that it is worth paying a lawyer to get your patent, and profitable enough to defend if someone knocks you off.
All in all the process cost me just under 20k.

Was it worth it ?
My guess is that with patents there is much more money to make with manufacturing processes and stuff like that than with consumer facing shit, unless you're very lucky.
