What do you guys do for a living?
Do you really enjoy it or are you just doing it to get by?

>>2020423
I do security, I don't enjoy it but I Bulged a disc and waiting for it to heal so I can get back into my welding career...
>>

construction inspector for my state's DOT
I love my job because 80% of the time I chill in the office not doing anything. Nothing to inspect if the contractor isn't working that day. Not the greatest pay though, only 60k.

In my spare time I daytrade momentum stocks. Still kinda suck at it, but hoping to become good enough to be able to quit my job and just daytrade within the next 2-3 years

>>
Investment banking associate - M&A. Large possibility I get promoted to Vice President in December

I enjoy how challenging the work is, but I hate the fucking hours sometimes.

On my way to work in the morning, I daydream about finding a job that I could work remotely for ~15 hours a week and just enjoy my life. Then I get to work and like solving the problems that my MD throws at me. I'm just over staying late and dread going into work because there might be a chance I get home past midnight.

Healthcare consultant. Make over $160k a year but it's been over 3 years since I spent fourteen consecutive days in one time zone. Yes, I've done the math.

I drink most mornings to get through the days of having clients yell at me for things they did while I bill their time during it. I hate myself and my life.

Stone cold quitting on June 30. I'm going to sleep for a month straight. It's going to be amazing. Got enough saved up to do nothing for like 2 years but plan on getting something together around the end of the year.

Op here.
I've been working in the retail business for 4 years now and I'm finally ready to get out. I did go to college for accounting, but I dropped out because I wasn't doing very well in my classes. I went to Community college and then transferred to a good 4 yrs school, but couldn't handle it, so I left.

I'm thinking of going and getting a job at a hospital and work there for a year or so. I think I will then try and use their tuition reimbursement plan and go back to school to get a cert in something once I'm ready for school.

Is this a good plan?
>>

I work in buffalo. The 3rd poorest city in the U.S. The people I service live in what should be condemned houses. They keep dogs locked in the basement in their own shit and piss. They claim they have no money, when I tell them it will be 1200 to kill their bed bugs they pull out a stack of hundos. It will be 9 in the morning on a Wednesday and kids will be sleeping in not going to school. They live in section 8 housing but have 2 closets full of brand new Jordan's. I have had to call animal rescue a few time to save dogs and cats from abandon apartments. See in buffalo a large amount of the housing is upper and lower units. So the nigs will beat feet and leave everything behind, including their animals. So I go to kill roaches or bed bugs in one unit and the other units tenant will tell me they hear the animal going crazy for a few days or maybe a week and the other tenant has been gone.

I could use some advice from /biz/. I think I made up my mind about my future, but am still having some doubts.

So my end-goal in about 10 years is basically to be an influential figure in my chosen field of law. Its a relatively small field with not many people active but it represents a huge monetary value and is always in development.

My situation:
>nearly finished with uni
>specialised in a certain field of law
>did three internships
>first at low level municipality
>second at semi-prestigious law firm
>third at ministry of economics
>all internships highly relevant for my field of law.
>build a small network

Got two options now:
>job opening for legal advisor at a national advisory organ that represents many interesting organisations
>will be handling many interesting cases in an advisory capacity
>hugely beneficial to my network
>1 year job
>move on after 1 year, hopefully made a name for myself in that year.

Option 2:
>apply for position at law firm
>guaranteed job for years
>slow progression
>be one of many
>however, be able to make good money in a few years.

What would /biz/ do? Option 1 feels like more of a gamble that could pay of nicely, or blow up in my face. Option 2 is the slow but steady route.

Anyway, long and rambling blog. But this is a big decision for me and I'm really not sure yet. Leaning towards option 1

Pay and hours are great. On the clock from the time I leave the house till i get to the hotel. 40 bucks a day for food and I keep what I don't spend. I have a bankroll dedicated to poker that is around $5k and I play 1/2 no limit with a $300 buy-in. Generally I just play very tight aggressive and try to get atleast 5 hours in when I play, if I'm up over $100 early then I leave if the table is bad, if the table is really good I'll stay for as long as I can.

I highly suggest starting with around 20 buy-ins and play very tight, don't get swept up into the drunk gamblers.

>>

Honestly. It was kind of a fluke. Made some small connections locally, made a Facebook page, looked up affiliate marketing, found some partners, and just signed up.

1st deposit was like 14 dollars. 2nd one was like 2300. It varies but all I do I posts about local stuff. Local venues that go through ticket master or something.

It is different based on location but there is almost always a broker for things.

Tickets need selling. And if you can in front then you'll make money, my social media stuff is the biggest in my area. So naturally people trust what we say and we don't spam or post Shit so they don't unfollow us.

It's pretty simple once you have the following but getting there is tough. Need to have some kind of platform to monetize.

Hope that makes sense.

>I enjoy how challenging the work is, but I hate the fucking hours sometimes.
Problem with that kind of work is that you get addicted to competition - have seen it again and again. Which isn't very good at the end of the day.

It's better to do something other people aren't doing - less competition and so higher chance that you're succesful.

Just like in financial markets. Trying to get an edge analysing some large firm is usually a waste of time.

Bookkeeper here. Made the decision to become one after failing out of uni the second time, and honestly just needed a good, non-degree job that wasn't retail or hospitality. Got a manual labour job for a year, then paid for a short course out of pocket and did an internship/random volunteer stuff. I've been working for a large accounting firm (not big 4, but close) since January, and it's going well overall. My goal is to get more industry experience and clients, work there for at least 2 years, and get licensed to be a tax agent. Still live with my parents, and don't even have to pay rent, so I can save up. Then I'll go in one of 3 directions

>Keep my current job (especially if there's a raise or promotion) and buy an apartment.
>Get an accounting degree and go into management or tax accounting
>Become self-employed/freelance

I love the job, but it's more for the fact that I'm busy all the time, engaged in the work and not a complete failure, than anything about the job itself desu. No regrets though.

Middle school science teacher, 60k a year. Excellent benefits, take almost no work home with me, excellent retirement being paid for by (you). Enough income to invest in cryptos and do odd jobs every winter/summer or travel. Colleagues are based. Getting an admin credential right now so I can pull in 6 figures for yelling at stupid parents and putting out small fires everyday.

I love my job.
>>
>>2039731
You enjoy the teaching itself? What did it take to get there?
>>
>>2039738
I love teaching. Middle school age kids are kinda unique, they don't really have their adult identity and are trying to figure out what kind of person they want to be. All the while, they're dealing with hormones and a clumsy, growing body. This makes for all kinds of hilarity. Seeing children get how the things around them work and function is incredibly rewarding, and having them become interested before your eyes is indescribable.

I got a teaching credential (took 1 year full time, so I have decent sized loans right now) after my undergrad degree in Linguistics. You absolutely need a degree to become a teacher. My whole angle was that I wanted to teach English Language Learners, much of my undergrad had to do with second language acquisition. I teach in Los Angeles, so this is a very valuable marketable skill being there are huge Korean, Mexican, Salvadorean, Russian, and Vietnamese communities. In addition, there is a science teacher shortage. I basically got to pick where I wanted to teach because of this. I picked a school with a good principal, this is very important to do.

The only difficult or time consuming tasks are building a curriculum and differentiating instruction. Making sure all kids get an equitable school experience is not an easy task. An example might be, if a kid has an IEP or 504 plan (these are legally binding, so they must be obeyed at all times), adjusting the teaching to their needs (providing extra supplemental materials in a different format, repeating yourself, using additional visual aids, taking time to remind students to do certain tasks, etc.).

At the end of the day, I never come home angry or upset. No matter how much the kids try to agitate me at times, I remind myself that these are children and they are simply learning the ropes. And the next day, everything is cool again. I can't wait for a former student to write me a letter or visit someday after they have gone on to do wonderful things.
>>
>>2039785
That said, I want to move to the high school level a little while after I get my administrative credential. I think that the impact on students is a little more profound, and I think I am more suited to the roles there. The stakes are a little higher, and I would like to coach a sport or something too.

Luckily I always have another opportunity lined up if needed, and use those opportunities to get a raise as needed if I feel like the time is right.

The whole career process is bullshit right to the core. From the concept of HR to the concept of experience. Just because you did a job before doesn't mean you were any good at it. And the fact its very easy to not get a position because you rubbed HR the wrong way on the phone even if you were perfectly capable of doing the remedial task the job entails.

There are a lot of good jobs out there but like dating you have to go through a checklist to get what you want. If you don't immediately pass inspection you're passed over. If you can't fake it to make it to get through lifes bullshit dance you're fucked in this world.

Hows the money in quant shops?

And how did you get in?
>>
>>2040480
Do you hit the pay wall at a certain age or certain experience level?
>>
>>2040735
Just like anything in finance it depends on where you work and how close to the money you are. Assuming you're competent and the firm/ your desk is doing well: as a quant you can be raking in like half a mill a year on average. There are naturally some gun market maker traders on 7 figures a year and the juniors/ incompetent people and back end guys who are only getting around 100K-200k. I'm in Aus if that makes a difference.

I went to a target uni and was offered an internship with the prop shop I'm at. I did my honours in maths and finance (although really it was more like a math and comp sci degree), although I was offered the internship in my penultimate year. In case you care I prepared for the interviews by doing as many of those brainteasers they always ask you (I forgot the name but go look up those quant interview question books, they basically just use them with a few modifications) and brushing up on my basic coding concepts.

In the internship itself I worked my ass off and tried to solve as many of my simple code errors and bugs as I could on my own and basically annoyed the senior quant who was supervising me as little as possible. At the end of the internship they gave me a job offer.

tl;dr: In aus the average pay would be 500k or so. got in through going to a target uni and doing an internship and not fucking up too much
>>
>>2040739
In my country (NL) pay is still very much correlated with age, but a bit of both I guess.

When you hit the wall as a tech guy over here you have two options if you want to improve income:
1. Transfer to management (they get payed more for some reason)
2. Become team lead/technical lead which is also a move towards management in some way

Basically if you have no responsibility over other people you are stuck and with a lot of effort you can squeeze out maybe another 100-300 euros per month.
>>
Translation and staff manager for a porn website
Around $1.5k a month, the only perk is that I work like 3 hours a week or something

Administering people is frustrating even if they do nothing wrong, and there's always the stress that your team might not suffice for whatever reason, and the responsibility falls on you, the one who chose the staff
This is just supposed to be a side gig I do while looking for "a real job", but that'd require me to finish my Comp.Eng. degree, which in turn would require me to not be lazy human garbage

The worst part is that I'm in charge of distributing salaries for all staff, and I have to look at the webdev making like 2k a week with the same ease I only make 400ish with.

That could've been me, if I wasn't in the fourth year of a 3 year degree with only the first year exams completed

I'm a psychotherapist, work 30h a week and make about €70k a year. Love my job, because seeing clients getting their shit together and being able to enjoy life again is quite fulfilling. Also I love that I don't have to work fulltime to live a comfortable life
>>
Just approached late 20's. Currently a junior for a bs in geology even though job market sucks. I'm in the national guard too.

Overall I seem to have lagged behind those who got off to a good start straight out of college. I am a fit and smart enough chap.... just a bit lazy I guess. Oh well I pay for everything myself and always have since I was 18....

I'm kind of cringing because everyone in this thread seems successful and content with their lives.

I'm starting a foodie business w/ friend. Trying to also start a social media influencer program to help promote small business. But honestly I don't know what the fuck im doing.

The stories and information posted here are artistic works of fiction and falsehood.
Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

That is a great way to start out. I'm kind of jealous I dont have a cash business venture atm

Where do you work that you work so little and at the same time earn that much?

Where I'm from they only make 40k. Especially in the beginning.

I'm not a full partner because lack of capital, but I just have previous experience working operations for another niche foodie business.

Web Developer.

I hate it because the site I am dealing with I have 0 interest in and I have to work with a 12 year old system every day. Pay is also not the best but it's livable. Only perk is it's under 20 minutes away.

I do however want to start making side income either by investing or other means to be able to really save up for a house and shit.
>>
I'm a mover, I make about 17.50 an hour.

I love the workout it gives me but hate it when it's slow.

People wise, It's hit and miss, I'll work with the bottom of the barrel sometimes and other times, the guys will be alright.

Retail cuck here.

I'm a "salesman" but it's retail. Fortunately it has a good commission structure on top of the hourly wage, so my earnings still exceed my expenses.

I became really lazy and unambitious during my final year of high school, so I didn't pursue higher education or any kind of marketable skills. I just sort of settled into this comfortable rut with a wage slave job and a smallish apartment and stayed there for years.

But during the last few months, for some reason, I've become reinvigorated. I feel this zest for life again that I haven't had since I was a teenager. I'm eating and sleeping way better, I'm improving myself physically and mentally, I've begun training some practical skills in my spare time and I have financial/life ambitions again. I'm still in this little apartment, but I'm slowly working my way out of it to something better.
>>
>>2044224
good for you bro, keep going
never stop improving yourself
>>
Police officer. Getting a free education thanks to the military (will probably take 10 years to get my degree because I'm lazy and it's not required for all but the highest ranking). Max out my 457(b), IRA each year and have a pension and rent out 3 units of my house, any excess money goes into a brokerage account. Pay is lower than average for my field but I can always work overtime or secondary for shiny new thing money. Will probably retire at 53 and make $200,000ish yearly combining everything I have saved together. Great job and love my life but it's definitely not for everyone. Also wish I wasn't single :(

>just wait until the economy collapses

Keen on getting into HFT in Hong Kong

Background is languages and business (was originally pretty people focused, but started working in tech and realised I much prefer the technical side, so became a kind of business/data analyst and wrote a lot of python and sql)

Really want to move from tech to finance (find it interesting and the money is better), looking for a reasonably technical role like trading, but I'm afraid my educational background will mean I won't even get a look in.

Any advice? I'm learning C atm purely out of interest, but hopefully that'll stand to me down the line. I get the feeling that very soon anyone in finance who can't program will be on the menu for downsizing
>>
cryptocoin trader lmao

Education is good anon, good luck

I do retail too, AP/LP here
>>
>>2025288

>>
>>2045720

I think HFT is probably one of the more flexible places when it comes to prior background, they care more about you having some specialist skills/ knowledge than just bog standard experience in finance. Eg an electrical engineer with experience using low latency systems like fpga or a game dev experienced with multi-threading or CUDA etc. is way more valuable than some excel monkey from a bank. Big data and machine learning too is a pretty exciting field.

As for trading itself the main thing is being really quick on your feet and having a great attention to detail. Hence why every firm basically has you doing a heap of those simple math problems and brainteasers as well as seeing how you cope under pressure. It can be pretty soul crushing when the market moves against you and all your quotes get picked off or some rich guy takes a punt and does like a million lot order or some shit. These days you don't have to be like one of those guys on the Chicago pit floor who can do 7 figure multiplication in their head but it helps to be able to estimate and gauge things accurately and quickly for stuff like hedging your greeks and knowing what your PnL is.

Language wise I primarily use C++ and python as I'm in a more researchy role but C is also pretty widely used as well as stuff like Java. The functional programming languages such as OCaml or Haskell would be useful to know as well, but I don't really operate in that space myself (yet). You're right though, in this day and age you need to be able to not only come up with new ideas but also be able to implement them yourself. The main thing is being able to learn new concepts as you go, as generally you can teach a good programmer a new language or concept but you can't make a shit programmer good that easily.

Anything else you'd like to know about?

Dropping out of college at the moment because...itll require another 2 years and my gpa sucks

Working security for my university while I finish up my meme degree
Luckily I got a tuition waiver so I can keep my parents happy with zero cost to myself. Should at least get my foot in the door for a few jobs or be a good bargaining chip for higher pay because I'm not going to do anything in that field
Dunno what I'm going to do after I graduate
Have saved up a few grand from this job at least, thinking on blowing it on a trip to thailand or something
>>
Construction contractor. 25/m
For my bullshit b.b.a. from state college and 10 state licenses, I'm only making about $40,000/year.

Given I probably only work "hard" 50 days out of the year. At least my dad is starting to respect me, or I'm delusional enough to think that's a possibility
>>
i work at a local computer repair store. make 10$ an hour + commission based on how much i made in repairs

pay isn't very good, but i'm pretty happy here due to the amount of freedom i have

Like, physical repair or IT repair? There's shops around here that do both but they are usually specialized to a certain extent.
>>
>>2030540
In Germany a lot of graphic designers are switching to UI/UX design as there are more jobs and more money to make. Personally, I always disrespect them as they often lack of some important knowledges compared to people like me who studied UI/UX at university. But at the end it doesn't matter because neither clients nor agencies give a shit about what you studied.

I'm in the airforce, I just sit at a desk all day so I can glance at it every hour or so if I'm doing a short term trade.
It's really fucking boring, but it's fairly ok money and I manage to save a ton of money and It's paying for my education.

I'm also the guy who once a month or so will explain military related things to /biz/ NEETs thinking of joining.
>>
>>2048720
we do anything really. some of us do more specific stuff (we have one guy who does most of the soldering jobs), but people bring in all kinds of shit. unless they wanted priority work (paying to have it done faster etc), it gets put on a shelf. the techs grab shit to work on, and then put it on another shelf when it's done. i think we're actually going to be certified to do lenovo warranty work soon though which is cool
>>
>>2048905
Would you recommend it? I'm going to be graduating pretty soon and don't have any job prospects. Also I doubt this is how it actually is, but I'd like to travel a lot and figured those two branches would be the best way to do it

What's up anons.

Work for EY in the advisory practice. That can mean a lot of things from day to day; sometimes I do IT Audit, other times security reviews or control design for new systems being implemented.

The job can be challenging but can also be boring as hell. Averaging 15%+ raises every year though

It's not a full out restaurant. Found a coffeeshop going out of business(already decorated, grease trap etc). Decent area, got the place for a steal. At the end of the day it's a huge risk, but from my previous experience as an operations person running a niche foodie place. It's a risk worth taking IMO. We'll see.....
>>
I started and run a memefoodtruck in Australia.

We (by which I mean I and the local cooks in any area I set up) sell Slavic home foods.

Sometimes I sleep in my truck at events to save money.

I designed our aprons to look like zupan.

I'm actually really quite content travelling around selling homemade kvas and smelling like cabbage.

It's comfy.

Not rich, never will be. But comfy.

oh shit, i fuckin love vegas and actually go pretty often. next time i go, i will google "bitcoin boba", im sure youll have some press on it or something. that would also be kindve a cool name

Bro yeah I have to take a shower after I eat. I don't wan to smell like eggs and bacon when I go out.

Same guy here, cheers for the info m8

How does the recruiting typically work for these places? Coming from a softer background I'm wary of being glossed over at the CV stage. Is it like most small companies where you can network your way in, or is it very much focused on online applications? Guess I'm just looking for a way to stand out from the crowd.

Also, any particularly good firms in Asia you'd recommend hitting up? I know Jump Trading and Tower Research Capital have Singapore offices, but I don't know much about the landscape yet beyond that.

Hey man, I also work in M&A as an associate. What's your group? I'm currently in FIG but I have the chance to move to a large real estate fund. Dunno what to do, the deal flow in FIG right now is pretty strong.

Business Development Manager and Technical Recruiter.

I enjoy my job SOMETIMES, it's nice when you close a fat deal (and even better when you get that fat commission check on top of your salary).

I probably spend over half of my day browsing the web and trading shitcoins, which is probably the only reason I haven't left. Comfy salary, only "work" half the time.
