use the proprietary desktop wallet of the coins developers....

ie. i have pivx, so i use the pivx wallet directly from the devs.

don't store your coins on an exchange. if you wanna know why google "mt gox"

if you're looking for a decent exchange with a good selection of altcoins, most people use either poloniex or bittrex.

i personally prefer bittrex
