So the one thing I'm confused with is how taxes are calculated. I understand you get taxed on all the profits you've made on stocks (if you have 10 shares of a stock you bought at $1 and sell at $2, you get taxed on the $10 profit).

What gives a stock its value /rgt/? I dont mean what makes the price go up or down, i mean why do people, ultimately, want to have them anyway? It cant be the intent to sell them later because that doesnt inherently give them value, if they had no value they would be worth nothing to start with. Is it only the dividend? It seems like payouts are too low for that to be what gives it long term appeal to someone, and some dont even pay out at all.
