Eth is not a currency, but a payment for computational power from the network to execute smart contracts. It's not a payment system but a platform for dapps with a wide range of application (especially in fintech).

However, it's not there yet. We have two more releases on the roadmap (metropolis and serenity) and Eth is still in its PoW stage.Getting in now means you can stake for more once Casper is integrated. All memes aside, Eth is on the forefront of a technical revolution

Venmo doesn't have fees. Ethereum can't handle a huge amount of transaction right now, but with Raiden coming it should be fine.
