Anybody here work in quant trading? What would you say is the most valuable major at uni for the field? The school I'm going to has a math + cs joint major, but I'm worried employers won't find it rigorous enough.

Also I'm not in SEAS unfortunately so I can't do ORFE.

>you can get a Quant Trading job with just an undergrad degree
You must be a time traveler from the 90s

I'm planning on working a few years before going to grad school, are there really no opportunities for quant based finance jobs just with a bachelors?

You can probably get some sort of pure software development role at a prop trading firm with just a Bachelor's. Doubt it will be in the algorithmic trading portion of the business probably more like data pipeline or support stuff.

I'm currently a grad student at a good university in the UK targeted by banks/hedge funds

I spoke with one of the largest quant hedge funds/CTAs at a recruiting event a few months ago. For quant researcher roles they mostly recruit PhDs - they're fairly agnostic regarding the specific subject and are happy to speak to people from across mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science, finance, engineering etc..

...however they don't always find enough PhD students with sufficient stats knowledge - a Physics PhD who has studied statistical physics would probably be fine, and Electronic Engineering PhD concentrating on signal processing would probably be fine. But there are plenty of Physics, Maths, Finance PhDs who don't have sufficient background in stats/forecasting

So although they primarily want to recruit students with research experience as researchers as a result of the lack of supply of PhDs they will recruit one or two masters students each year though these are specifically people studying statistics or machine learning.

I'll also add that more conventional hedge funds are looking at recruiting people with machine learning experience and are targeting people at the masters level not just PhDs as again this is a skill in short supply. For example there are two hedge funds specialising in credit who were offering projects for MSc students.

If you're not going to study a PhD then an MSc program in statistics or machine learning is probably a good option.

in the UK for ML you'll want Cambridge, Edinburgh or UCL. For stats any of those are good too plus Warwick, Imperial and Oxford.

For North America I'm not as familiar but CMU, MIT, Stanford and Toronto all have some well known academics in ML. CMU in particular seems to have a decent MS program.

EE+ML from state uni should be decent right

thanks for the info

it seems that after uni I'll have to do something in finance other than quant trading

I am looking eventually to get a masters in financial engineering with a focus on machine learning
or operations research with a focus on finance

but that's a ways down the road lol
