How should I play the French election?

Is there a high enough chance of Le Pen/Melenchon winning for me to start shorting French banks already? Or should I buy now on expectations of a Macron-Fillon victory, given that investor sentiment may be undervaluing them.

How else can I play a potential Frexit and/or make money off of a French default?

That's a pretty far-off prospect even if Le Pen or Fillion wins. Same goes for a default.

That being said, I seriously doubt the Socialists will win, any conservative outcome will likely be Eurosceptic, so I would pay attention to the price of the euro. But I wouldn't bet on Frexit unless after a potential Le Pen victory, which even then, won't necessarily pass a referendum.

Does Fillon stand a chance of making it into the Second Round? If either him or Macron win, would it be smart to long French stocks? Both of their economic reform plans seem pro-business and should help the stock market, right?

French anon here.

Le Pen, Macron, Fillon can all go to the second round, each will have more or less 20%.
Le Pen/Mélenchon seems 95% impossible, according to me.

Could someone point out some problems for this strategy to me? Just before the results come out (and I mean just before) I want to be going long on both the EUR/GBP and the GBP/EUR, but I'll have stop losses on both positions.

I'll hopefully minimize my loss on the losing pair, and hopefully the winning pair spikes up enough to make a profit. I think this is somewhat similar to people straddling with options (buying both put and call, and hoping the price change at least covers the premiums for both).

Are the results for the first round released all once at a specific time (please let me know what time if u know), or are they staggered? If it's staggered, then my strategy might not work.
