Big deal, people die at work every day. Every profession has its hazards.

I do it, currently on my off week. The pay is not "massive" - the reason why a lot of the guys say that is because they are from some shit town in Georgia where everyone they know is trying to get by on $5/hr. To them, this money is massive. This generally means this person is southern trash, which 90% of the people here are.

The reason why the pay is decent is because you can't leave. You work 14 to 21 days, 12-14 hours a day. At $20/hr, thats good money but you don't work every week in the month and most guys are hourly, not salary.

For about every 4 or 5 guys, you have 1 boss. For every 2 bosses, there is another boss. If you aren't an engineer, then you are the lowest of the low. All of the people in charge generally fight over you because there is more of them than there are of you. Only way they can stand out is by catching you fucking up or getting you to fuck up. Most contractors/labor types don't last more than a year or two. You eventually fuck up, and you will get caught because there are 40 sets of eye-balls on you. I was working on a ladder and I was on the third rung. I put my foot up on the fourth rung to shift my back (I was standing on it for 6 hours straight) and I had 3 people come up and yell at me. My harness lanyard was connected to a rotting I-beam, if I fell I would have landed in the ocean and probably died on impact if I wasn't strangled by my own harness. But to them, me putting a foot on the 4th rung of a ladder was a big no-no and then they fought over who gets to put my write-up into the computer. (I had to get a lawyer to call H.R., that's how seriously lopsided this shit is)

Also, there isn't a bunch of tool pusher and general labor types anymore. 3/4ths of the guys here are from the military and they got along by pushing their weight and bickering and they do them same in this industry. Right now HR for a lot of the bigger guys have put forth a "no ex-military rule" so the good news is that this shit might improve here soon.
