Shall we look into how this chain rose to such heights in the last 20 years?

I'm confused by how a chain could explode like starbucks did, in an era dominated by recessions.
What service or benefit were they selling that got consumers to part with so much of their money so readily?

interestingly, their brand has become a social construct
Cause they're good. Also first to do wifi in stores.

Indirect celebrity endorsements

Maybe they marketed towards the people that profited from the recessions?
because people can work in there on their laptops

Starbucks created coffee into a culture. People didn't work in diners, but starbucks came out as an offering of chic europpean coffee culture in America.
They grew that by offering wifi, books, music and a consistent coffee anywhere they popped up.
The growth strategy of starbucks is very different from other chains. It doesn't matter if one store cannabalizes another, what matters is if regional sales go up.
So their metrics moved on coffee sold, not same store sales.
Once they had the brand, they pushed corporate culture. Starbucks baristas are paid better, offered college tuition and starbucks will hire excons, refugess, whoever.
They pushed the idea of "doing good" along with a consistent brand everywhere.
Basically, they took the McDonald's model to middle-high income.

Hiring excons, I'm glad they are helping out

How did they survive the early stages of re-inventing coffee culture?
