thinking about starting a VPN service for friends/family now that ISPs can sell your data.. how hard can it be? already have one up and running for myself and gf.
thoughts:
-expected userbase = 30-50 users (20 already very interested)
-need to scale up another two(ish) servers across the US
-need a way to bill automatically (paypal maybe)
-charge $5/month, servers cost $10ish/month.. difference is profit = ($5*30)-30=$120/month to start
what am i missing here?
But how are you going to sell the users data you collect? You forgot that part

"you just gotta trust me more than TWC/charter/other ISP"
but actually not trying to sell the data as part of the package.. honestly will keep enough to do some basic statistics but not enough to link dns requests to individual users
bump? this could actually be a small /biz/ and no one is interested?

There's way better and more trusted services for cheaper. Why would anyone use you?

valid point. if I'm only looking to sign up friends as customers to start, I'm basing it on the "friend factor". $5/month is somewhat competitive. I'm seeing quite a few $30/year deals these days which is half as much.

It's not really competitive.
Doublehop offers a better service for $33/month.
This is your competition.
