Commodity Prices: http://www.cnbc.com/commodities/

Thread is for a general discussion of commodities, including precious metals, energy (oil/natural gas), and soft commodities.
What's the deal with the latest oil price slump? Is this a buying opportunity based on a short term slump or are we looking at a reversal of the higher prices trend? Should I initiate a position now before OPEC meets on Sunday or are we just going to see more of the same and oil head to the thirties again?

Everything i hear here and there tells me oil should be lower than it is. That and common sense telling us that oil is going to become obsolete as an energy source in the near future as other energy sources become more viable as the tech improves and the prices go down and make them more practical.
I mean oil is still used in the production of pretty much fucking everything.
Didn't Exxon's shareholders pressure them to start investing in renewables recently?
oil will never be replaced but i think it definitely has further down to go before it hits bottom
I own cocoa futures via the ETF $NIB, bought a couple weeks ago. Other commodities not compelling enough.

I've always been really interested in getting into soft commodities, now that oil is about as secure as going to Vegas thanks to OPEC and shale.
How's cocoa doing right now? What made you initiate a bet? Are there any trends favoring/not favoring soft commodities right now?

It's at 10 year lows, and people like chocolate. I don't really know much about commodities to be honest, but I didn't feel like buying more S&P500 and had too much cash.

I've been thinking about maybe taking a look at coffee or sugar, but soft commodity analysis is a bitch to find news about. Where do you get updates from?
I generally use Seeking Alpha, but all of their commodities section is industrial metals or energy stuff (nat gas/oil).

I don't know. I don't care about news because it can be spun. Price never lies.
My portfolio is too small and I'm too chickenshit to invest in actual commodities (although I've been thinking of buying an ETF like GLD which would allow me to circumvent the hassle and high fees/commission of buying gold, at the cost of actually owning the gold).
As an alternative, I invest in mining companies rather than the commodity itself. I do the same with soft commodities; I invest in ETFs tracking agricultural companies, rather than directly buying corn or livestock.

I mostly trade commodity ETFs as well. Back in late 2015-early 2016 I rode the gains of DWTI but i haven't seen it rise past $175, much less hit those $400+ gains. I'm interested in getting into a few more commodities and maybe doing more oil price analysis though.
