You can make money, but you need to be vertically integrated from tree to finished product. Standing timber is worth pennies a board foot to the mills.
If you live on the land you can have your own business

I would imaging that you could sell some sort of hunting or foraging rights depending on what lives on the land.

Some areas will significantly cut your taxes if you promise not to further develop the land.
I have an uncle that has 30 acres 10 miles outside of a major city. His property tax gets cut in half for leaving it as is. All the surrounding properties have been developed.
