You essentially look at a business' strategy, the risks they face, and methods the should use to generate revenues. You also look at how to best allocate costs, in order to reduce prices and make deals. Pretty much every time you see a sale or discount on shit, management accounting was used to figure all that shit out (it also includes aspects of finance).

It's an area of accounting. Accounting could be said to consist of 2 parts: financial accounting and management accounting.
