The selling points of LinkedIn are:
1) Everyone uses it.
2) People you may know is a pretty good way to make connections to recruiters who are a couple degrees of separation away from you.
3) Yes you can message people. Most people don't though
4) It's a place to brag about your career.

I'm a creative so I've got a Dribbble, Behance and a portfolio web page, but I really don't have answers to anyone else. Wish I did.
