If that supposedly happened (it didn't), in order for them to turn it back into useful currency they'd have to mass-sell, bringing the price down again and negating the effect of their skyrocketing, resulting in an almost no net gain

That's only IF you actually sell it. They could always actually go use ETH as an actual currency.

There's always the second option of hoping other people will get on the hype train, bring up the price way more and than sell it while the value is high enough for the drop in price to not be a problem.
