Why can't I buy it directly through coinbase? Do I need to purchase Bitcoin and then convert it to Ethereum?

Should be able to. Maybe not on coinbase though. Im not sure about the spec on NY law for finance regulations but I know from last year they can only buy/sell USD in BTC from the exchange ruling.

But if you want to use Coinbase, you have to do USD --> BTC --> ETH

Bruh, just set a notification for ETH for when it goes below what you bought in for. You can do this with coinbase's mobile app, but I'm not sure what else.
