i just turned 30 and have no college degree. i'm thinking of taking up programming. i'm from the SF bay area, so i figured i'd be able to get a job in san francisco or something.
should i learn programming, and will i be able to get a job if i do? if so, should i take online courses?

Yes.
I'm assuming there is enough material to learn it without paying for an online course.
There are countless books you can download and dive into.

Learn it
People keep telling me to do C++ and then I'll have less trouble grasping other languages

You probably will not be able to get a job w/o a degree. Even if you code better than the IT/comp sci majors, the degree is a requisite to find a job, b/c employers just screen applications. I'd still say learn it b/c its a useful skill, but finding a job will be HARD
