Can someone explain how this works?
I've had money wasting away in the form of gold for years and it doesnt look like the trend is going to be reversing any time soon, so I'd like to try something else.
How do you choose an ETF? What should you be considering? What kinds of returns can you expect? Can you take any amount of the money out at any time without penalty?

Your risk tolerance and what markets you want to invest in. The latter is kinda a personal preference if you don't really do any serious research or have a specific strategy in mind.

ETFs are designed for the buy and hold investor given their low expense ratios, so consider what money you have that you won't be needing for the next 5 years.

They're index funds, so expect returns in accordance with the market average of whatever sector they are in.
