Somebody who reads 2-3 books per week please redpill me.

I've read enough books to notice that you basically glean one real point from each book, something that could've been summarized in a paragraph or sentence which is then multiplied to hundreds of pages. So how can you find that point as quickly as possible without missing it?

Are there some methods I'm supposed to be using, like reading only the opening and closing paragraphs of chapters?

Or are you just skimming for things that catch your interest, or for things in the table of contents?

Or are you actually reading every word of the book, like with Readsy or something?

the red pill is to take the romantic imagination you have about books away (like youre trying to)

you gotta find ways what work for you.

I'm using Voice Dream reader for almost everything and I worked myself up to 550 wpm

so in theory I could go trough tolstoy war and peace in around 10 hours

How To Read A Book by Mortimer Adler. Thank me later

I hate those self-help-self-employed-internet-business-gurus talking about how many books they read per week. Fast reading. Audiobooks. Reading only interesting chapters.

Just read it.
If it is non-fiction do your research, take notes, google the events/names mentioned in the book (if it is a biography for example), get a calculator and test the advice given, compare the advice to other books and what other experts say. Take your time to fully understand what you are reading.

If it is fiction enjoy it. Read and enjoy the story.

Simple. Read reviews/book notes by different people. For example this guy here: https://sivers.org/book

There is also countless YouTube channels that do book reviews, for example that guy: https://www.youtube.com/user/phuckmediocrity

Audiobooks are fantastic though. The advantage of them is that you can just listen to them while you have downtime.

I often just listen to them in the train or car. Or when I want to finish them I just take a stroll outside and walk through the park with my mind in the book.

A study book obviously needs to be read, slowly. But other books don't really need that treatment.

This week i've read the idiot by dostoyevski because someone on biz recommended it. Now im reading the ragged trousered philanthropist because it sounded interesting (i discovered its mainly about socialism)

Books are interesting just read them

You're reading the wrong books mate.

>Are there some methods I'm supposed to be using, like reading only the opening and closing paragraphs of chapters?
That only works with textbooks where the key points are summarized in the last few pages of each book.

What you need to do is before you buy, download, or borrow a book is determine what your "objective" is, what you hope to get out of it.
Look at the writing style: is it dense? Good. Is it repetitive? Bad. Does it speak in broadstrokes? Bad. Does it get into technical specifics? Good.
Is there editorializing or explanation for what anecdotes and quotations mean? Good.

The most important thing is WRITE NOTES. Any time something interests you, write it down, make sure to actually write it, not copy and paste it or photograph it, and do it in your own words rather than directly quote because that way it crosses the verbal-kinetic divide while also fitting into your own concepts and thinking patterns so it becomes committed to memory.

not just that but also think about how we humans "learned" in the past, we told each other stories!

humans didn't start reading until the past century and nowadays they don;t read at all just watch television

Jesus! It takes 6 weeks to finish a novel like American Psycho.

Don't get me wrong, if I had to drive for an hour to work I would listen to audiobooks too.
But I still prefer to read.

Did no one here go to college?

Your not supposed to read the whole damn book unless your reading for pleasure. You are supposed to be looking into the book for something.

Lets say you want to learn about the stock market.

You go down to the library. you ask the librarian for books about finance. You look at the section for about 5 books that catch your eye. You grab those books. Then you open to the chapter of contents and see if there is any section on the stock market. YOU READ THAT SECTION. And if you dont understand what you are reading its the wrong book for you. Go to the next one.

You are supposed to be looking for information on specific subjects not "ONE NEAT TRICK THAT WILL MAKE GEOLOGISTS HAITE U".

Do you really think people read those entire 3000 page reference books? No you jsut want the relevant information without all the annecdotes.

However if you really have no idea what information your looking for just pick up a "dummies guide" style book and read through that. After that the parts that jump out at you are what you look for.

This is rediculous.

Anything worth reading is worth rereading. When it comes to advanced topics, you get more out of reading something several times than reading new material. Yes, it's true.
