Could there have been any way to serve this firm? Such as:
-Bailout: The Treasury could've put aside political will and made things seem like the house of cards was falling down, similar to what happened later when things heated up and the others had to be bailed out.
-Purchased by another bank: Could Barclays have bought them? I know Bank of America passed them over for Merrill Lynch and it's clear that Barclays does has tremendous benefits (http://www.euromoney.com/Article/3256454/The-numbers-that-prove-Lehman-was-deal-of-the-century-for-Barclays.html) from their Lehman deal.
Or another method perhaps?

They couldn't be all saved. Those in worse state were selected and Lehman was picked as the loser. Their balance sheets probably resembled hell on earth.

Why couldn't they all have been saved? Political will, lack of funds, the underlying valuations of the toxic assets?
