Redpill me on Equity/Investment Research, /biz/.
Is it banking for the thinking man? Or just glorified accounting?
Thinking of trying to break in. I'm fascinated by how the market moves, but I'm not chad enough for IB or trading.

it's glorified marketing for the Bank, you're writing shit that people internally won't pay too much attention to but which the Bank might send to clients.
Traditionally you'd then perhaps move from that role to some fund, probably picking up a CFA along the way.
Don't know how much longevity there is left in these sorts of roles but if you can get one and jump from it to a PM role then probably still worthwhile.

Huh
So same quality of work as IB, then (i.e long hours writing shit people won't read) but for less money
Does it get better on the buy side, or just the same?

if you become a PM on the buy side then money increases by... lots

Don't rule out trading if you can afford it. True day trading is a big can of worms, but buying and holding things for a few days at a time is easy money if you learn to spot arbitrage opportunities and upcoming catalysts. It's like options trading with training wheels.
