There's no golden rule or widely agreed upon value for getting started in investing, but if there were it wouldn't be $20; half of it would go to your broker commission.

Another anon's post about keeping 6 months worth of living expenses as cash or cash equivalent is a common, good philosophy.

For now, just hang onto your $20. Once you're able to get a job, even minimum wage, there's no shame in that, start saving at least 20% of your income, until you've got enough money to live for about 6 months in the event of an emergency, financial or otherwise. Your next step will be setting up an investment account; probably through an online brokerage like td Ameritrade. I started investing with $500, which was a good amount for me to experiment with while I learned about investing.

In the meantime, if your situation allows you time, start researching; if not you can start researching while you build up your cash reserve once employed. When you're ready, start with YouTube tutorials for beginners, you'll get the essentials, and be referred to other useful resources like specific books, famous investors to watch. Ask specific questions when you have them, /biz/ tends to be an ok place to ask questions.

That's how I made my first 1000 dollars before I got into actual investing and online commerce. Won't work if you live in a legal state.
