You buy a small fraction of a company for a small price. When the company does well, your stock's value increases as the company profits (Or decreases when the company doesn't do too well). It is then up to you whether or not you want to sell the stock for a profit or keep the stock in the hopes that it continues to increase in value.
tl;dr: It's fucking gambling and you likely won't get rich off it
