Get some bitcoin on localbitcoins or somewhere that sells bitcoins

Sign up for poloniex

Transfer bitcoin to poloniex and buy Ethereum

Obtain an ethereum wallet

Send ethereum from poloniex to eth wallet

Exchanging money for bitcoin and then onto etherum sounds like an awesome way to pay a lot of fees, can't you just buy etherum on coinbase?

Better hope shitcoin doesn't crash in the meantime

It'll come back up, I believe the general trajectory will be upward until the next major memecoin appears, but there'll definitely be corrections between now and then

I expect one in the next month, probably not down to €750 or before, but enough of a dip to buy back in

But that's just a hunch tbqh

I buy at Kraken. Pretty easy. Be sure to backup your wallet and password multiple times securely on different devices and offline.

Bought some ETH at 12,15€ but couldn't stop trading and lost money. Only a few bucks but anyway. If i just held I would have made 6€ in 3 days. I will try not to panic sell in the next months and years.

Btw why isn't it as easy to see transfers in ETH wallet as in Buttcoin wallets?

Hope /biz/ didn't memed me into a stupid investment.

That's pretty good considering the ETH:BTC ratio is at .0125 now. IMO I think there will be a pullback possibly after the Ethereum Enterprise announcement as people sell the news. It might be a good idea to take profits at the high now, and look for a re entry during the sell off. This is just my opinion though.

Fair enough. My point is, it's wise to not fuck around with the tax man. Just pay what you owe and sleep easy at night. You don't want them coming after you 5 years later for principle and interest COMPOUNDED DAILY. They've got teams upon teams of people who's only job is to sniff out fuckery and swing the hammer. If you think crypto is under their radar you're nuts.

Is this really such that Capital Gains taxes will apply to them? That makes no sense to me, bitcoin is just digital currency, if I change my Dollars into Euros and the value of the Euro shot up, I would not be taxed on that so why should the Gov't be getting in on digital? Seems like they have no reason and just want in to control it.
>>
>>1825719
You'd be assessed tax when you cash it out into fiat. Sure if you just buy and hold crypto and it appreciates but you never cash it in, there's no tax to pay. But what's the point of that? Let's be honest...if you suddenly had $1,000,000 worth of buttcoins you wouldn't cash out?

no shit, it works for everyone
it'll stop being mineable when ETH switches to POS, no one knows when yet, estimated perhaps late this year into next year. but no one really knows yet
>>
>>1825114
yeah, or that the same calculation pays more
but that also means that more people are likely to be working on hashing Ethereum, so it doesn't necessarily mean mining is more lucrative
>>
>>1827802
is it worth buying a second RX 480 to mine with or am I better off using that $250 to just buy more ETH?
>>
>>1828250
depending on where you are in the world there are much cheaper 480s than 250
beyond that a lot depends on other factors. power cost, how often you're mining, how tied in you want to be
if you have free power then i would get the card. even after eth goes to pos you can mine something else, and so on, after the card pays for itself it's all profit and then you can sell the card once you're done
if you dont then it's hard to say, i would probably just buy eth? but i dont know
really hard to suggest one or the other without more info
>>
>>1828256
I'm currently mining ETH on a single RX making about 4-5 ETH a month. I just don't want to spend too much mining and then miss out on a big payday if ETH possibly hits $100 soon.

Also what are some other popular coins for mining?
>>
>>1828258
ZEC is the other big one for now, also z classic, expanse (also dual mining like eth), XMR if you dont pay for power
those are the ones i know off the top of my head
if you're worried about eth mooning soon then put your money there. if you want to play the long investment and steady money game get a card. personally i dont see eth hitting 100 soon, maybe MAYBE by the end of the year

Just Google/YouTube the basics if you have no idea what BTC/crypto actually is. Then you Google what types of wallets there are, if it didn't already explain this. Then you Google for a site which can sell you BTC/other crypto for real money, or browse these threads for recommendations.

You'll either buy from an online wallet website, where you'll have to go through a long register progress first, and it'll let you store coins as well, or buy from a website that'll send coins directly to an address (does not always require an account, but it might require certain verification, e.g. sending them $0.01 from your bank account first). The address can be found within whatever wallet you decide to use.

Next you'll most likely want to send your coins to an exchange (unless you only wanted BTC, or whatever crypto you bought, to go long with). There are multiple different crypto exchange websites on which people are able to make buy/sell offers and trade with each other (the website obviously taking a small fee for each trade). Just register at whichever exchange website you decide to want to start using. Check if the crypto you want is available on there first, though (e.g. you can't buy/sell TrumpCoin on Poloniex, but you can on C-CEX). Lastly, after registering and logging in, you'll need to find the address for the coin you want to put on your account. Send your coins from whatever wallet you're using to the exchange account's address. After the exchange account received them, you're ready to start trading.
>>
>>1830345
yep. Been using is for a year now no problems. Then just type your wallet address in the website to view your mining rate and how much you're making.

Alright you jews,

so how do i into crypto? Where should I start? I was into crypto a long time ago (round 4 years ago) and made a fuckton of wallets and made very very little btc. I forgot it all and left it behind....however....this ETH hype is motivating me to go back into the crypto scene.

Now my question is, what should I do? I have a good amount of capital I'd like to invest in, which is roughly $500 USD.

I don't even know why I bother with this board. If you only have 500 bucks to invest and you're choosing to dump it into cryptocurrency, you must be both an autist and either NEET or a fast food employee. 500 bucks is lunch money bro, if that's all you can afford to invest, put it into something safer than memecoins and let it grow organically.

No one is responding to you because you word yourself so poorly. Proof of stake will not increase the value drastically, read this:

https://github.com/ethereum/wiki/wiki/Proof-of-Stake-FAQ

Ethereum will increase greatly as developers begin utilizing the programming/smart contract part of ethereum which is the part that makes it unique. (With combination that it's technically better than BTC at every level).

your wallet hasn't synced up yet. sometimes it can take days.

you can still send recieve eth using the .JSON file of your private key in your wallets keystore folder uploaded to myetherwallet.com

just go to myetherwallet.com, browse for the .JSON file corresponding to your private key, select it, type in your password and boom your wallet will open on myetherwallet, then you can use the functions on myetherwallet to send your ETH. or simply gloat over it.

Blockstream/core and its fucking segwit/LN is stopping bitcoin from getting bigger blocks, there fore fees are rising 300% and there is a transaction backlog of 50000 transactions.
>>
>>1833012
So what can I do? Can i move the BTC into a wallet and sell somewhere else? I'm new to coins so I've never sold them before. What is the usual thing to do?
>>
>>1833024
The usual thing to do is not to sell them cheaper than you bought them in the first place... Buy low, sell high. The larger the transaction, the more the net profit, obviously. Buying at 1.18 and selling at 1.21 when you have 50€ worth of buttcoins is just moving cents/satoshi around.

Depends on how many BTC you have and what you want to do next. If you want to buy in before the possible happening on the 11th which may shoot either way, Id wait for the lowest and buy then (bitcoinde had it today for 1.143, that of course does not mean that somenone was selling for that amount). Then just sit on it, if you see an opportunity/good deal, buy some more. If there is a dip, either buy some more, or wait it out without touching it (if you spent all your money beforehand).
>>
>>1832906
>point of stake

exchanges have a lot of bitcoin on reserve, they make their money through transaction fees, not necessarily through the price fluctuation like speculators.

Or it could be a nervous person that doesn't want it to drop too far, or that their sell order is set that low (or high rather).
>>
>>1832956
I just made the exact mistake - used Bitpanda as well.

Downloading your wallet via the official ethereum website makes it WAAAAY more complicated than it needs to be.

Here's what you do:
>Open the shitty ethereum app thing that doesn't update because it's downloading the entire blockchain first (fuck knows why)
> At the menu there's an option to backup your account or whatever
> This opens a directory that has a bunch of files. One of them starts with UTC....
> Go to myetherwallet.com
> Click 'view wallet info'
> Upload the UTC file and put in your password
> Save the PDF file with your private key password

Or, you can transfer your ETH to a new wallet, one that isn't shitty Bitpanda and actually lets you withdraw

ALWAYS, for everyone who is new to this, before you send coins anywhere, send a small amount to coins to test if it works. Especially when you transfer bigger amounts.

So, China controls more than 50% of the BTC miners now. Since BTC only works because it's decentralized and knowing that China's entire economy is based on deception, what's the likelihood that they're just "printing" BTC or raping paper wallets that haven't been touched in a few years?

Seems to me that as the flow of BTC from illegitimate sources increases, the price will just continue to go down until it hits zero, at which point it only makes sense that they'd put their miners to work on other cryptos as well.

u can use coinbase ethereum wallet, where they hold the private keys. or you can send to your own wallet (hardware or online) where you hold the private keys and have full control over your ether.

It's not just miners who have a vote. Bitcoin network consensus or 'Nakamoto Consensus ' is comprised of all the main parties involved including Miners, Wallets, Developers, Merchants and Exchanges. If anyone of these entities does harm the network punishes them by ignoring them and choosing someone else to work with instead.

If the miners attempt to do harm we will fork around them.
If the developers attempt to do harm we will fork around them.
If the exchanges do harm we use different exchanges.
If the merchants attempt to do harm we use different merchants.

Let me make this clear, NO SINGLE ENTITY IN THE BITCOIN NETWORK HAS TOTAL CONTROL.

is there really that much demand for a currency on a decentralized smart contract platform?

i realize that we aren't locked into a corrupted system, and can always build anew, but looking at it from a global phycological perspective, what possible reason could China have to control majority processing power if they aren't using it to bypass the decentralization rules?

When BTC first started becomming popular, it was common knowledge that if a single entity controlled more than half of the processing power, they could override the rest of the sytem because everything relies on impartial verifications, if China controls the majority of the miners doing the calculations, those verifications are no longer decentralized. Sure, we could fork it and create a new main coin, but there's nothing preventing China from using those same miners on that new coin as well.

their ASICS are specifically designed to mine SHA256 bitcoin algorithm i thought?

Yes, but even if they only operated at 10% efficiency when mining alts, the farm size would still be more than 50% because nothing else has nearly the same network size as BTC.

I don't want to see it end, I've made pretty good returns over the last couple of years; but if we're looking at the beginning of a new era where China has the power to access old wallets and "print" limitless BTC, it won't be worth staying in. What's worse is that they'd even have the power to hijack transactions, though I don't think they'd abuse that one simply because if they don't maintain the illusion of value, there wouldn't be anyone left to sell to.

The question really becomes: How far will they push that power before people castch on?

Is something happening with the bitcoin network right now? I've been waiting for a small transaction with blockchain.info's suggested fee for about 3 hours and have no confirmations
>>
>>1835112
I've never done fees, and transfers were taking about 3 hours between my wallet and btce back in Dec when i sold out. I don't know where transaction times are now, but if you're paying fees, 3 hours seems like a lot to not have any confirmations. Did you check and make sure the wallet address was right?

What do you guys know about Monero. I have about $300 worth of it and I'm starting to get hot for it. Thinking about converting a couple of BTC into Monero and just sitting on it for a few years.

Should I wait for the ETH price to drop further or just buy it now?

the future of digitial currency. the only currency that is not 90% speculation atm. the supply and mining algorithim are very similar to bitcoin, but the ring signatures and completely anonymous factors should bring it to a much higher market cap in the future without a doubt. obviously there would be major network problems if everyone on btc blockchain went straight to monero, but apparently it is scalable. i honestly dont understand the technical very well, but it's much more anonymous than btc and transactions are fast af, so thats good with me. $13.80 with $194 million market cap right now, converting a couple btc into monero is not a bad idea ;)
