I'd suggest the CFA but I don't know if you need a finance related degree for it.
You could try joining a big4 firm such as pwc in one of their graduate roles. There's plenty of positions which don't require an accounting related degree.

I'm interested in the CFA and a career in finance, but I know literally nothing about it. How would someone who has been out of college (and the job market) for two years penetrate this field?

Go to piratebay and get some CFA study material. I have a BS in finance from a top 50 school and I am not planning on taking it (though I once was). It certainly isn't easy, but if you dedicate yourself to learning it and honestly enjoy the fundamentals of finance you can succeed. If you're going to try to get the CFA for an easy / fast road to riches..you are a doublenigger.
